"Our society is one not of spectacle, but of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests bodies in depth; behind the great abstraction of exchange, there continues the meticulous, concrete training of useful forces; the circuits of communication are the supports of an accumulation and centralization of knowledge; the play of signs defines the anchorages of power; it is not that the beautiful totality of the individual is amputated, repressed, altered by our social order, it is rather that the individual is carefully fabricated in it, according to a whole technique of forces and bodies."

"Today ‘human rights’ is much in fashion, which makes it the subject of a certain amount of humbug. In a world where virtue is no longer its own reward, there are plenty of human rights prizes, many funded by corporations exposed for exploiting the poor, awarded to well-paid lawyers, well-meaning journalists, well-photographed actresses and politicians who have never had to risk their careers in a cause perceived by national authorities as subversive. Ironies abound: the Simon Wiesenthal Center, celebrated for tracking down Nazi war criminals, today gives its peace prizes to supporters of the government of Israel. Self-promoting pop stars are prepared to promote politicians if they support the right to debt relief, but not the anti-war and anti-corruption measures without which there can be no relief for the poor in countries bankrupted by armed conflicts and the extravagance of their rulers. In 2005, the ‘Live 8’ campaign to ‘make poverty history’ made no mention of ending the impunity which in Africa makes poverty inevitable. It would be churlish to decry the fashionability of human rights, but premature to think that this means the struggle to have them enforced - the crucial ‘third phase’ of the human rights revolution - has yet been won."

Founder Pardeep Singh Bahra talks about Singh Street Style, a blog featuring stylish men who just happen to be wearing turbans.

“I wanted to also give everyone around the world a new way to look at fashion, and to hopefully open doors for Singhs with turbans that want to get into fashion. I also want to encourage young Singhs to take pride in wearing a turban.”

Anger in France after attacks on Muslim women | Socialist Worker
By Sellouma
June 18, 2013
Thousands of protesters gathered outside the town hall in Argenteuil near Paris on Friday of last week. They were enraged and upset after a series of racist attacks against Muslim women.
Rabia, a young woman who wears the hijab, had been beaten by the fascists, but the mayor and police pressured her not to file a complaint. A second woman was violently arrested for wearing a niqab. People who defended her were also taken into custody.
The assaults went further last weekend when a pregnant woman wearing the hijab was beaten in the stomach. Her attacker also cut her hair. There are reports that she has since miscarried as a result of the beating.
The demonstration was the biggest expression of determination and action against Islamophobia in France for a long time. Groups of people were debating politics at a high level—it felt like a small Tahrir Square.
We urgently need to build an anti-fascist and anti-racist movement that is clear against Islamophobia—and what is happening in Argenteuil is an example to follow.
Unity march planned
A number of trade union federations and left wing and anti racist organisations are supporting a united national demonstration against fascism in Paris on Sunday of this week.
It was called in response to the killing of student Clément Méric by fascist thugs earlier this month.
Meanwhile the fascist Front National pushed the ruling Socialist Party into third place in the first round of a by-election near Bordeaux. It was called to elect a replacement for former Socialist budget minister Jérome Cahuzac who was forced to resign after his secret Swiss bank account was revealed.
This brings the government’s majority down to just three MPs. The Front National is now set to face the Tory UMP in the second round.

THIS IS WHAT FEMEN “HARDCORE” FANS LOOK LIKE
By EXit FEMEN The truth about Femen
June 14, 2013
We received this lovely hate message wishing us to die of cancer, accompanied with this charming picture of poop and bacon on the Coran. This is typically how Femen and their supporters think. This is pure hate speech, shameless islamophobia. It is disgusting and getting more and more popular now, thanks to Femen. It has become normal and completely okay to discriminate muslims, even for left-wing activists and feminists, like Caroline Fourest, Femen France’s good friend, who has been repeatedly accused of islamophobia.
Femen is promoting the hate for islam and for Tunisians by continously calling them islamists/terrorists and by complaining about the “islamisation of Europe” (these are their words !). This is typical Anna Hutsol / Inna’s speech and typical of right-wing’s racist speech. THIS SHOULD NOT BE OKAY.
This hate of Islam that Femen has been promoting tirelessly has already had some serious consequences. The real VICTIMS of this wave of islamophobia are, once again, the WOMEN. Last week in France, a woman has been attacked because she was wearing the veil. Muslim women are now being treated as criminals wherever they go, and they get arrested, insulted and attacked !
Denouncing oppression and dictatorship is a thing, fighting a war against a whole community because AND ONLY BECAUSE of their religious belief, is completely different, and it’s called DISCRIMINATION !Femen should and must be sued and punished for their xenophobic propaganda, just like any politician would be ! FEMEN MUST STOP PROPAGATING HATE, RACISM AND RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION ! We will never stop denouncing Femen’s true face, which is the face of racism and hate for any woman who isn’t one of them.
THIS IS NO FEMINISM. True Feminism doesn’t harrass ANY women.
