earth-song: vulspia: Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad. Awesome looking toad. This remarkable-looking toad belongs to the genus Atelopus but it is not a Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad (Atelopus varius), it is a different species of stub-footed toad popularly dubbed the “Purple Fluorescent Frog” and scientifically named Atelopus sp. It was discovered during a survey of the Nassau plateau, in eastern Suriname, in mid-2006 by Surinamese scientists Paul Ouboter and Jan Mol. Leeanne Alonso from Conservation International, the organisation that led the expedition, says that this toad may be threatened by illegal gold mining.
